Topic: How to Investigate the Brain and Memory Updating with TMS

Subtitle: How do I Enjoy Research

Abstract:

Executive function in working memory was regarded as a single ability in the past. Since 2000, it has been attributed to three factors: shifting, updating, and inhibition. However, the tasks and suitable materials for inspecting each factor are not standardized, nor is the methodology concerning brain mapping and working memory.

This study aims to investigate the updating ability, which is highly related to the intelligence and learning, in executive functions. The innovations of the study are:

1. Presenting various tasks with newly designed materials in different modalities, instead of using only visual text for N-back tasks;

2. Presenting materials comprising semantic information, which requires participants to determine category before remembering, instead of using simple items such as English letters or digits/numbers for memorizing;

3. Using Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to directly interfere three key regions of the human brain and investigate the roles they play in the updating process.

This study recruited human subjects and collected the behavioral data with and without TMS. The results presented a significant effect of TMS and non-TMS, and surprisingly, different levels of influence from task difficulties.

Since this talk is given at a seminar for graduate students, I would like to focus on the process of conducting experiments and also to share the way I enjoy research.

Keywords: executive function, working memory, updating ability, prefrontal cortex, TMS.
