Abstract:

In this talk I will start present two sets of data, one examining the role of active inhibition in intentional forgetting and the other investigating the role of the left posterior parietal cortex in episodic memory retrieval. In the study of intentional forgetting, we recorded event-related brain potentials (ERPs) in a procedure that combined semantic priming and item-method directed forgetting. Based on the finding that the ERP N400 effect was greatly reduced for to-be-forgotten item, we argue that the semantic processing is reduced by the instruction to forget and active inhibition is involved in intentional forgetting. In the study of episodic memory retrieval, we employed magnetoencephalography (MEG) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to investigate whether the neural correlates of recollection- and familiarity-based recognition are dissociable. The MEG data revealed that recollection and familiarity processes are supported by spatially and temporally distinct brain regions, including the dorsal and ventral parts of the left posterior parietal cortex (LPPC). In the tDCS experiment, we further demonstrated that the LPPC is causally related to recollection-based recognition. These findings provide further support for the dual-process theories of recognition memory.
