The Department of Psychology, National Cheng Kung University Introduction
The Department of Psychology traces its origin back to 2005 when the Institute of Cognitive Science was founded with approval from the Ministry of Education. In 2006, the Institute started to recruit students into its master's program and prepare for the establishment of the Department of Psychology offering a bachelor's program. In 2007, the Department of Psychology was approved by the Ministry of Education to be established and to recruit students into its undergraduate program from 2008.
Statistics show that as of August, 2011, more than 70 students had been enrolled into the Institute of Cognitive Science, while more than 150 students had been admitted into the Department of Psychology.

In August, 2011, the Institute of Cognitive Science was merged into the Department of Psychology as a single academic unit at NCKU, offering a bachelor's program in psychology and a master's program in cognitive science.

In September, 2014, the Department restructured its master's program in cognitive science into a master's program in psychology, with approval from the Ministry of Education.

In 2017, the application submitted by the Department for the establishment of the International PhD Program in Mind Sciences was approved the Ministry of Education in May. This Program is scheduled to start recruiting students in August, 2018.

The Department of Psychology is fundamentally and prospectively characterized by its interdisciplinary education and research encompassing the various disciplines of sociology, the humanities, medicine and engineering, aspiring to cultivate talented professionals specializing in basic research, practical applications and the field of body-mind-spirit health.

2006 Professor Jenn Yeu Chen, Dean of the College of Social Sciences, doubles as the first director of the Institute of Cognitive Science starting from August.
Director Jenn Yeu Chen initiates the preparation for the establishment of the Department of Psychology.
2007 The Department of Psychology is established with approval from the Ministry of Education.
2008 Professor Fu Zen Shaw is appointed as Acting Director of the Institute of Cognitive Science starting from August.
Professor Fu Zen Shaw is appointed as Acting Chair of the Department of Psychology starting from August.
The Department of Psychology begins to recruit students into its bachelor program from the fall semester.
2009 Professor Fu Zen Shaw is appointed as the second director of the Institute of Cognitive Science starting from August.
Professor Fu Zen Shaw is appointed as the first chair of the Department of Psychology starting from August.
2011 The Institute of Cognitive Science is merged into the Department of Psychology as a single academic unit at NCKU offering a bachelor’s degree program in psychology and a master’s degree program in cognitive science.
2012 Professor Fu Zen Shaw is appointed as the second chair of the Department of Psychology starting from August.
2014 The Master's Program in Cognitive Science is restructured into the Master's Program in Psychology starting from September, with approval from the Ministry of Education.
2015 Professor Shulan Hsieh is appointed as the third chair of the Department of Psychology starting from August.
2017 The establishment of the International PhD Program in Mind Sciences receives approval from the Ministry of Education in May.
2018 The Department of Psychology is scheduled to recruit students into its International PhD Program in Mind Sciences in August.
