0510An Economist’s Account of Interdisciplinary Research

Topic:An Economist’s Account of Interdisciplinary Research

Economists and psychologists share a common interest in understanding choices/behaviors. Economic theories of rationality can provide a starting point for psychologists to explore whether choices are rational and, if not, whether they are predictably irrational. I use three experiments to illustrate how questions in economics may be answered from various angles. I discuss how preferences may be context-dependent in humans, whether choices behind the veil of ignorance are related to inequity aversion in Formosan macaques, and whether there is evidence that fruit flies may tell time.

Professor Chen-Ying Huang received her Ph.D. from Harvard University. Her research interest is in experimental economics. She is keen on understanding preferences/choices. Collaborating with neuroscientists, psychologists, and biologists, she uses various techniques such as fMRI, rTMS, and eyetracking to answer her curiosity.
