0503The spatiotemporal neural dynamics of object selectivity: an MEG-fMRI-DNN fusion study

Ample evidence has revealed that top-down attention can selectively modulate object processing according to task goals by enhancing responses to attended objects and suppressing responses to unattended objects in extrastriate visual areas. These selective operations are underpinned by a network of cortical regions with specific temporal dynamics of neural activities. Many studies have indeed investigated the neural responses to object perception and selective attention in space using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) or in time using magnetoencephalography and electroencephalography (M/EEG), respectively. However, relatively little is known about the spatiotemporal properties of information processing and the underlying mechanisms through top-down attentional modulation on object selectivity. In this talk, I will present recent work that addresses the questions in a representational similarity analysis (RSA) framework. Within this framework, we investigated spatiotemporal profiles of object selectivity in the human brain by integrating neural patterns from magnetoencephalography (MEG), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and deep neural networks (DNNs). Through the RSA-based MEG-fMRI and MEG-DNN fusion approaches, the study provides novel multivariate evidence elucidating the cognitive operations and the neural mechanisms that underlie object perception and selective attention.
